Human Nature of Breaking Rules/Orders

I know this is not just one of MY weird quirks. Most people are like this. Why is it that if someone clearly tells us NOT to do something, we have to go ahead and do it!? Maybe I go against the grain more than your average person, but I know if you tell a kid NOT to go somewhere that’s the first place he or she will go. The picture below is what I came across as I was around the student union offices. Someone who obviously didn’t study psychology (or just not socially adept) put up a sign above a light switch saying: “Do not switch the light thank you!”. Now if I was walking down this hallway why would I even think of flipping this switch? Truth is: I probably wouldn’t have. However, someone decides to put a sign up saying not to do it, I just have to. Why is that!?

Moral of the story: If you don’t want people to do something [they normally wouldn't do anyway], don’t give specific instructions NOT to do it! I think maybe I see things like this as someone giving me an order. I don’t like that. As a matter of fact, whoever put this up might have had better luck putting up a sign that said: “Turn this light on!”. Best alternative is just not to draw attention to it. Strange how a lot of people will not do what they’re told. Sure enough, I couldn’t resist. Here’s the pic as I flipped the switch… ;)

Flip the Switch!
