Commerce Games 2005

Last weekend (Jan 7th-10th) I was at the commerce games. 14 universities from eastern Canada participated in academic and sports events. It was an incredible experience. JMSB has such an awesome school spirit it’s insane! I competed in the debating event where we came in 4th (not too shabby for a team of rookies!). I don’t feel bad because I know we should have won the semi-final, which would have given us a 1st or 2nd place finish. People from the opposing school even came and told us that they thought we had won!! Of course, you can imagine our surprise when they announced that we “lost” the semi-final. Anyhow, the rest of our sports and academic teams did a great job. The official results were:

Marketing: GOLD!!! (I didn’t get to see the presentation but apparently our bright marketing women impressed everyone including coaches from other schools!)

Accounting: 5th (Please note: they presented without a Powerpoint show! I had never seen anything like this before!)

Tax: Bronze! (That’s right…our team beat out CAs!! :P )

HR: 4th (They did a great job!! Too bad the presentation had to be cut short. Damn timers…)

IBus: Silver!!

Strategy: Bronze!

MIS: Silver!! (Ro, Fern and Pat showed ‘em how MIS is done!!)

Entrepreneurship: Silver!!

Finance: GOLD!!! (These guys were all incredible speakers. Another great presentation!)

Stock Sim: Bronze! (ROE…it’s all about equity…something something…)

Debate: 4th (?!#@)

We ended up with the silver medal for overall (sports+academic) performance and gold for academic performance! Good job team!!! :) I didn’t get to party much because us debaters had to present both days! :( Anyway, on to the pics I managed to take:

When we arrived at the Hotel Rimouski, everyone got their jerseys on and we went floor by floor cheering for all the schools. Yes, those water bottles are full of beer… Laval university (who eventually won the spirit award) had all kinds of drums and horns and stuff. Crazy school…“L! A-V! A-L! Allez Laval Let’s Go!” (I think that’s what the french cheer was?)

Theme Night 1: ARMY! Here’s one of my co-debaters (Dan) sporting his military gear!

A bunch of drunk university students yelling and screaming school cheers in the gym for a good…ummm…2 hours!? “C-O-N! C-O-R! D-I-A! Concordia! C-O-N! C-O-R! D-I-A! Concordia!”

Some people went in army gear other people went as terrorists. In the buffalo suit is our boy Adam (aka: The Complainer). He was a good sport about it. Not to mention the girls love the suit!!!

Here’s to our fearless debate coach/leader! All the schools kept referring to us as the “agressive team”! lol

After waiting around the gym forever, we finally got the parade started. Here’s JMSB comin’ out in style!

I don’t remember which team this was, but I liked the makeup!!

Theme Night 2: ASTERIX – Here’s Sana and Steph (my 2 roommates from spirit weekend). Steph really looks like a gauloise!!

Here are the girls beating Dustin’s……drum. And there’s a lovely Egyptian on the right (Gen!)

Dustin and I posing in our gay gaulois costumes. We were going as homo-twins. Nevermind the difference in skin color! We also never realized we had such sexy legs… :P

Here’s a pic of the JMSB boys just before heading into the gala/awards ceremony on the last night.

Master debaters: Dan, myself, Dustin and Louis-Eric. These guys were awesome to work with. They taught me everything I know about debating in about 2 days!!! :)

Dustin was trying to get a pic of my buddy Melanie (she was on the Chicoutimi debate team that we beat in the quarter final round) and I. Apparently he took the pic at his eye level! ;) Yup, us JMSBers are nice to every team before and after the debate. We’re just very rough during! :D

I stood up and took this random pic @ the gala. There’s our boy Dom (on the right) who amazed the crowd at his superior accounting presentation!!

Here’s Sana, another one of the incredible accountants who presented without a PowerPoint presentation!!

Vanessa, Cat and someone else bustin’ a move at the “Degrise” (spelling?)

Apparently “Degriser” is a french verb which means “to sober up”. I had never heard of this Degrise thing, but it’s basically a party where people just chill and you’re supposed to have a chance to sober up. Of course, university students keep drinking!! ;) I never knew Dustin was a DJ until I saw him DJing at this event!

Someone wanted to take a “rearview” pic of my buddy and I. Now I see it’s true…I barely have an ass! :( :P

I hope to get some more pics from other people, so I’ll post them once I get them.
