03:33 in Montreal; most of you are in dreamland! :) We landed in London at about 07:45 local time on the 28th. We all got day-travel passes so we could go around the city later and took the tube (metro/subway) to get to my aunt’s house.
My grandfather has a way of speaking to random people anywhere and everywhere. This is a skill I need to pickup soon! He started talking to this guy on the bus who turned out to be an American who was going to Zambia to help with AIDS relief for 2-3 months. His name was Sam (like my grandfather). He was a young guy who looked to be about my age (maybe slightly younger) and told us he was a Christian as well. When I got off the bus he said he would pray for me. He looked very sincere and I think I’ll be glad to hopefully meet these types of people (i.e kind aid workers) when I get to Sri Lanka (SL). I think with everything I’m about to do I’ll finally be making a habit of praying every morning. I know my dad will be happy to hear that!
Once we arrived at my aunt’s place around 11:30, I fell asleep until 23:00! So much for my day pass and not being affected by jetlag! I got up around 23:30, turned on my laptop and saw that there was an open wireless network here. As Fernando (CG2005 MIS team) said: “God bless open LANs!” (that’s Local Area Network for you non-techies! :P). I transcribed* what I had written in the plane the night before and went back to bed around 03:00 so I wouldn’t sleep all day again.
I woke up early Saturday morning, had something to eat and then we went over to the Croydon mall. I need to come to London during the summer eventually. I’ve been here about 5 times now and it’s always been either during the winter or spring (crappy weather!). And what’s this idea in North America that British people have bad teeth? I think my lovely Brit colleague Lesley explained it to me at some point but I don’t remember now. My uncle took us out for some good Chinese food. Later that night we visited a few more relatives and came home. Now I’m up early again blogging.
I got an offer from a local organization in SL to help them setup some LANs (now you know what that means!) at the displaced people’s shelters. I told them that I would be working in the remote areas and that if they needed something out there, I’d be glad to help. Our 12 hour (I think) flight leaves at 21:00 tonight and we will be landing at 16:00 local time. Yay! Another time zone! I’ve received a bunch of very positive, encouraging emails in reponse to my “Goodbye” email. Thanks guys, it really means a lot!
*When an entry starts with *Transcribed* it’ll mean that I’ve changed the “Post time” so it matches whatever time I actually wrote the entry at. This will be for when I don’t have internet access and I will be writing with an ancient tool I refer to as “pen and paper”. If it’s not *Transcribed* (like this entry), it means I’ve got Internet access @ 08:33 on Jan 30th.
