Happy Birthday Ammah!

*Transcribed*Too bad this’ll be going up on the blog after the fact, but today is Ammah’s (my grandmother’s) birthday! We called to wish her, but had to leave a message since I guess she wasn’t home. I have to go buy something for her that I can send back with Kunju and Jacob. In other news: [...]

8.2 Earthquake Just Reported

Apparently there was an earthquake just off the northern coast of Sumatra. We’re watching the news right now…hopefully this won’t be as bad as December 26th. They’ve issued Tsunami warnings in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, etc.

Happy Easter Everyone!

I just wanted to leave a quick note to wish everyone a very happy Easter. Here’s something fun I found for this occasion via Heather’s blog: Check it out!

I’m still working on typing up my Mullaitivu entries.

It's A Hard Knock Life

Wow. I just spent 4 days living in an IDP (internally displaced persons) camp in Mullaitivu and helped build the foundation of the building we’re putting up; the experience of a lifetime in just 4 days. My whole body is hurting because I’m not used to sleeping on concrete floors and [...]

Back in Colombo

What an exhausting day! Tudor and I caught the 09:30 bus. I couldn’t believe I managed to stand in a very crowded bus for over 3 hours till we finally reached the checkpoint. I think I’m going to carry some air freshener with me next time! I called Hesh (my aunt) as soon as we [...]

Leaving the Camp

*Transcribed*

It was sad to leave the kids because they kept asking if we would come back. Jacob said he might come back in a few months but promised that I will be back sooner. I guess I have no choice now! No, I was planning to come back either way. I told them I would [...]

Carom: Canada vs. Sri Lanka

*Transcribed*

The rocks hadn’t arrived at the construction site so we were able to come back and play Carom. I think the kids are so excited because, as in most cultures, the “adults” (if you can call me an adult! ) don’t take time to play with the kids and we are taking the [...]

"Smile on an Orphan's Face"

I couldn’t get the ice cream today because we were told that the truck passes when the kids return from school (around 14:30). That person was mistaken. Apparently it passes by at 13:00. Not sure who’s marketing/distribution idea that is (aren’t kids the ones who consume the most ice cream??), but anyway, next time I [...]

The Profitable "Volunteer" Business

*Transcribed*

We had another conversation this afternoon of how many of the iNGOs (International Non-Governmental Organization) are so wasteful. I touched on it in this entry but now I’ve really seen everything first hand. It’s sickening to think that while some people in these camps barely have food [...]

No Need Alarm Clocks

*Transcribed*

Like clockwork, the kids came and woke us up again at 06:00 this morning. I could hear them outside for about ½ hr earlier and one of them finally peeked in and woke us up. These people are very happy to see foreigners roughing it out with them. One of the boys keeps asking if [...]
