I was in town today waiting in line to pay for something. A little kid in front of me tugged on his father’s sarong, pointed at me and said: “Vallai Karan” (Tamil for “White guy”). I laughed because I’ve gotten darker in Colombo and I get EVEN darker after a day in Mtvu! I answered by saying: “Illai, nan oru Tamil karan!” (“No, I’m a tamil guy!”). His father laughed and the kid ran off. I guess I’m white compared to how dark some of these people are! Jacob had a similar experience when he was on a bike with someone and another guy came up and asked the driver in Tamil: “What the hell are you doing with a white guy?”
