Pick Up Lines – Who Uses Them?

I had a quick look at the comments on my “About Women” entry and someone suggested I do a bit on pick-up lines. So here it is: What exactly are guys supposed to say when they’re going to speak to a random girl?

Sample Pick up Lines

• Are you wearing space pants? Cause your ass is out of this world.
• Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?
• Is your dad an astronaut? (No?) How did he manage to put the stars in your eyes?
• Your feet must be hurting. Cause you’ve been running through my mind all day long.
• Excuse me miss, I seem to have lost my phone number, can I borrow yours?
• It’s not my fault I fell in love. You’re the one who tripped me.
• I’ve had quite a bit to drink, and you’re beginning to look pretty good.
• My boys over there bet that I wouldn’t be able to start a conversation with the most beautiful girl in the room. Want to buy some drinks with their money?
• I may not be the best looking guy in here, but I’m the only one talking to you.
• Hi, my name is (insert your name here). How do you like me so far?

Believe it or not, I’ve actually heard guys try and use the first two and I’ve heard a variation of the third. The first one was used by a French kid at Le Loft so it sounded more like: “Eeeuuuhhh…Har dose spayce pents? (excuse me?) har dose spayce pents? (what?!) Eeeuuhhh…coz your hass his howt of dis werld.” Good gawd. Second one was at Angels, I believe, and my friend just answered: “No, try walking somewhere else.” Ouch. Another one I remember was when a random old guy came up when we were on a rooftop terrace and said: “Do you come here for the music or for the stars?” who says these things!? I’ve always wanted to pull out one of these cheesy pick up lines just as a joke; so, to be fair, maybe that’s what these guys were doing, but I doubt it.

Before I left Canada, I was out one night and felt proud when a guy (who was older than me) came up, shook his head and said: “Kid, you’ve got so much game and you don’t even know it. I’m just watching and learning!” LOL! I think he thought I had game because I started chatting up a girl (who was cute, but wasn’t talking to anyone) and after a couple of mins, she was laughing and actually doing some of the talking. I eventually introduced him to this girl and let him take it from there. Yeah, I’m normally a good wingman! I have to be honest: I’ve never initiated conversation with a complete random. I think REAL game is if you can manage to chat up a complete random and get her to like you. By the time I’ll talk to a girl, I’ve made eye contact and (sometimes usually) received a smile, so I’ve got a head start.

I was trying to think of what it is I say to initiate conversation. Usually, I would just walk up and say “Hi, how’s it goin’?” followed by some sort of remark on whatever is going on at the moment (e.g. the atmosphere/music/DJ/their friends/whatever). Obviously if the answer is something other than “good” or “fine”, such as: “I’m bored.” then that opens up a load of possibilities (assuming she hasn’t said “I’m bored” after you’ve been speaking for half an hour!). If you have a decent sense of humor, use it! I’ve never met a girl who said: “I hate guys who have a sense of humor.”If the girl is laughing (with you, not AT you) it’s normally a good sign. On a similar note, another thing that always helps is to SMILE! Not just in terms of picking up, but I’ve always believed that smiling always makes people feel more comfortable. Ultimately, I think it’s just a question of being yourself and not forgetting that there are PLENTY of fish in the sea; if one doesn’t like you, there’s always someone out there who will…eventually.

Finally, I seem to like the “Hi, my name is Ian. How do you like me so far?” I’ll have to try that one day, although it sounds slightly pretentious. I REALLY want to try: “I know milk does a body good, but damn baby, how much have you been drinkin’!?” LOL

If anyone is willing to comment, I’d like to know:
A) What are your thoughts on pick up lines? Have you ever tried any? What funny ones have you actually heard people use?
B) How often do YOU initiate conversation with randoms?
C) If you’re female, how do you expect/like to be approached by a guy? (i.e. What works for you?)
