Pictures of Wesak

I couldn’t login to my blog last night, so here are some pics I took on the 24th. I went out with my cousin (well, uncle, technically) Ivan to go check out some of the Wesak sights. Here’s what I saw. Sorry a lot of the pictures didn’t come out well. I still haven’t got the hang of this “Night-shot”-mode! I also realized I didn’t get a picture of the ‘standard’ Wesak lantern which is basically just a square/rectangular shaped paper lantern.

In the very first picture you can see how busy the street was. Now, I was thinking that the street would be closed for traffic (similarly to when St. Laurent/Crescent street are blocked off during our festivals in Montreal). Wrong. Not in Sri Lanka. 3-wheelers, motorcycles and SUVs were making their way through the crowd as well! The other pictures show some of the Wesak displays. Each “booth” has a number because it’s a competition.

These are Pandols which tell a story of…something. I think each Pandol is supposed to be like a parable and each picture is numbered so you get the correct sequence of the tale. You can also see how big these are relative to the size of the spectators!
