SLTT: Orange Juice – Hold the Salt

Sri Lankan Travel Tip: When ordering orange juice, ask if they put salt in it. Salt is used here to make the juice less bitter.

When I first got to Sri Lanka I had ordered a freshly squeezed OJ*. Once I got it, I took a sip and it tasted like salt! Figuring someone had mixed up the sugar and salt, I went and asked the girl if she had put salt in it. She said: “Yes! Is it too much??”. Slightly confused I said: “Do you guys always put salt in OJ?” it seemed they did.

I was reminded of this because the same thing happened to me the other day. Not all places put salt in their OJ, (and it didn’t happen to me for a while) so I didn’t think to ask. Unfortunately, salty OJ is not my thing! :) However, if you like salt in your OJ, then please be my guest. If you don’t, make sure they don’t put any in! Now you’re prepared.

* When speaking, I never refer to orange juice as “OJ”, although some people in North America do.
