Security? Me?

“I’m not a big guy”, I said. “Don’t worry. There’ll be a lot of big guys there who’ll be watching out for you.” was the response. Someone who used to attend our church has a security company and yesterday was asking if I’d be able to fill in for the night. I decided to go for it since this would be another completely new experience for me. I’m all about trying new things! :)

As I arrived I got a crash course in frisking people. The venue was the Just for Laughs museum so I figured it was some kind of show or concert. I was curious as to why they needed people to be checked at the door. It turns out it wasn’t a show, but rather a party…this party! I was a little worried when one of the head bouncers said: “Check everyone carefully. It’s often a rough crowd at these parties.” I had to stop guys that were like 3 times my size and check them; sounds crazy, but I got used to it. One of the guys working with me had worked at a few of the afterhours clubs so he told me all the possible places he’s seen people hiding drugs; very interesting. I ended up catching 2 guys with weed on them. Here’s the thing: I know some people must have got in with small quantities because I could smell it on the way to the bathroom. However, if you’re carrying a ziplock bag full of this shit that I can feel in your pockets…come on now.

Things learned:

1. I thought I knew most of the common slang for marijuana: grass, ganga, pot, weed, hydro, dro, draw, mary jane, mj, stick icky, chronic, whatevever. I asked a guy what was in the bag in his pocket. He said: “Bun.” I wasn’t sure what that was so I asked him if I could see it. It seems “bun” is another slang term for weed.

2. Girls keep some strange things [to have in a club] in their purses! I saw everything from a New Testament Bible to teddy bears (!?) to mini hair curlers to whatever other random things you can think of!

3. Despite your size, if you’re part of the security crew, people pretty much do whatever you say!

I had a fun time. I think I would do it again. The music was really good and the party seemed to be really happening. I guess now I can say I was a bouncer at an event! :D lol
