Baby Aunty's Funeral

We reached London just in time. By the time we got through traffic and arrived at the house, we had to leave to the funeral within 10 minutes. Jacob and I quickly put out suits on and set out.

When we got to the parlor we saw Baby Aunty’s body in a casket surrounded by flowers. I have never seen my grandfather cry like he did; actually, I’ve never seen anyone cry like that. They were extremely close. I’m never really sure what to do when people cry because I’m typically not a very emotional person (i.e. I tend to keep my emotions to myself). From there we headed to the church and finally to the cemetery.

This is the first funeral I’ve attended where I’ve had more than 3 conversations with the individual who passed away. I remembered how she would talk and laugh with my grandfather about the good old days in Sri Lanka. I remembered her smile. I remembered a few years back how she asked Liza (my lil’ sis) if she could read her diary. Once Liza agreed, she gave it back after a few minutes and said: “This is boring.” I remembered how she would always ask me what I was doing at university and then she would ask me the same questions a few minutes later. I remembered our last conversation (on my way to Sri Lanka) and how I fell asleep on her couch. A few minutes after we spoke she leaned over and whispered to my grandfather: “Who is this boy that Jacob has brought with him?”

The church and burial service were beautifully done. I don’t really know what else to say, but once again, I offer my deepest sympathies to the whole family

We all walked behind the hearse until we reached the church. Some of my cousins were the pallbearers.

After the service we headed over to the cemetary. I had never been to a burial before.

Little Leah (her granddaughter) threw some dirt in. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust…
