Petting Crocodiles in the Black River

We had planned a few day trips, unfortunately we only managed to do one. I was glad we chose to go to Black River and YS Falls (next entry)!

We rented a van and headed out. There’s Amber, Daniel and E in the back. Second pic is while we were driving. I told people how Jamaica reminded me a lot of Sri Lanka in terms of the scenery as well as the laid back attitude of the people there. We decided to take the Black River boat tour.

Here are some pics of the crocs we were about to pet… :) I thought this was the coolest thing: as you can see in the first pic, they sit their completely still with their mouths open. They’re so still that they look fake!

Here we have the guide getting the croc to come closer to the boat. Then you have me petting it! :) It felt like a pair of new boots; it was an interesting experience. Last pic is a couple of birds. Not sure what kind, but maybe someone can tell us! :)

The river is extremely quiet and peaceful. At some points as the one shown in the first pic, it’s completely silent; you don’t even hear birds or water moving. The second pic is of some trees where the roots actually grow above the ground, so those stem-type things that you see are actually the trees’ roots. The last picture is a massive termite nest!

Another pic of the peaceful river. It’s called Black River because the peat at the bottom makes the water appear black. However, the guide dipped his [empty] water bottle in the river and filled it up to show us that the water was in fact very clean. Second pic is a shrimp fisherman in a hollowed out canoe! Finally, all of us travellers on the boat: E, Gary, Amber, Daniel, Mo and myself.
