The Day I Became Old

The Montreal Metro During Rush Hour (Picture from wikipedia)

When I was younger, I remember thinking: “The day that happens to me, I’ll KNOW I’m old!” Well, it finally happened.

Last Wednesday morning I was taking the metro (subway) downtown to go to work as usual. When I got on the crowded metro, a gentleman who looked to be about 19 jumped out of his seat and tapped my arm.

- Excuse me sir, would you like to sit down?
- [Looking around wondering if he's actually talking to me] Uhhhh…no? No! No, no, no thanks…
- Please, please sit.
- No, I’m really fine. Please, keep your seat!
- [Shrugging his shoulders] OK.

I’ve taken public transport since I was 9, so I was trained to offer my seat when necessary. However, I only offer my seat to the following people (in order):

  1. Pregnant women
  2. “Old” people (very frequently)
  3. People with kids
  4. People carrying a bunch of stuff
  5. Random cute women

I wondered: Why was he giving me his seat? Was it the suit? The glasses? The fact that I hadn’t shaved? The company logo on my laptop bag (did he want a job)? Do I look that old? Anyhow, very nice of him, but I was left quite puzzled…
