Picking up Women in Bars: Social Experiments

Ladies’ Night photo from ABC News article

I have a [bad] habit of turning bar/club encounters with women into social experiments. The reason behind this, is that I don’t actually believe I’m going to pick up my future wife in a bar, so I don’t take those meetings seriously at all. This is ESPECIALLY true (and fun) if a girl appears to be one of those high maintenance / “all the guys want me” types because I can’t stand them.

Yes, I realize I should give everyone a fair chance and I’m probably missing out on lots of nice girls, but let’s talk about that another time. Here’s what happened last night:

Situation: I’m out having a few drinks with some friends at a lounge in the old port last night. It’s about 02:00, the place is packed and there’s a cute girl (~7.5) sitting next to me being approached by several guys. Unfortunately for the guys, she’s brushing them all off. I decide this could be fun, so I turn around to talk to her:

“I’m curious. How many guys have tried to pick you up tonight?”
She starts counting her fingers and says, “I’ve run out of fingers!”
“Ha ha, wow, good job!”, I start turning back
“Wait, you’re not going to try?”
“Nope.”
She looks very confused, so I explain, “I have a habit of not chasing women.”
“I NEVER chase men!”, she quips back.
“Good. Keep it that way!”, I turn around and keep talking to my buddy.

After about 5 minutes, she taps me on the shoulder and says, “You don’t want to be number 7?”. I [fake] laugh heartily and immediately follow with a straight face: “No.”. After a few more minutes she gets up to leave, so I take her seat. She comes back with a smile and says: “You’re not allowed taking my chair unless you try to pick me up!!”

I don’t chase skirts; but maybe I should? Women make me laugh sometimes…

You may not have been trying but looks like she was… :D

That little saying by Shaw on your blog should say it all, don’t you think?

“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.”
    -George Bernard Shaw

Hey thats a brilliant line. Are you operating in Colombo? Can I take a few lessons from you?

  • Indyana

“a cute girl (~7.5)”….good god Ian, was that a rating??

  • Scrumpulicious

I think it might have been a rating Indy!

She does sound like she was trying hard. If you had tried it, do you think she would have accepted?

reminded me of a scene from Hitch..

@Dili – Not sure if she was trying or just trying to get even more male attention!! :)

@JJ – What do you mean? That I should be chasing girls in order to create [good] circumstances? :) ha ha

@JP – No, unfortunately I “operate” out of Montreal, Canada. I also don’t think you want to take lessons from me!! :) However, I’ll be in town for the first time in 4 years this summer, so hopefully I should have some good stories!! :)

@Indy – Good gawd… lol It certainly was! :) I’ll have you know that a 7.5 by my standards, is quite good!!

@Scrumpulicious – I’m not sure to be honest…as I mentioned to Dili I have a feeling she was just looking for more attention and when I didn’t give it to her, she insisted even more! I’ll let you know if I ever run into her again. Although MTL isn’t as small as CMB, it’s still quite common to run into the same people every once in a while!

@BM – Yup, something like that! :) I wonder if I could start a similar business…I’ll have to work on my pick up skills a little more first!!

You also need to be as cool as Will Smith.

Unfortunately, that skill cannot be learned, or I would be teaching it everyone.

  • Ian Selvarajah

Dom – Yeah…and Will Smith being the king of cool makes my job THAT much more difficult!!

I agree this is something that can’t really be taught, but wasn’t there a show once where a “master pickup artist” taught a bunch of nerds the art of picking up? I’ll have to look it up…
